The Challenge

Overcome site constraints to power more than 400 yachts and cool 67,000+ square feet of temporary structure

The Miami Yacht Show 2019, due to popular demand, was moving to a new location. This major event features hundreds of large-scale yachts for visitors to enjoy in many forms, but providing power to these boats would be difficult.

Not only did the new location suffer from a bigger distance between the venue and the yachts, but there were space constraints too. These obstacles could prove troublesome for potential power and temperature control packages to be installed.

The event organisation were on the lookout for a partner to collaborate with the many other organisations involved in the successful running of this big event – and to deliver a solution for both power and temperature control that allowed the many spectators to enjoy the show.

Working with the customer, a new Aggreko acquisition (A-Contact Electric), Aggreko Engineering Dept, a local High Voltage contractor (Electricians), and the city of Miami was key in helping to provide a safe & successful event.

The Solution

Mobile, modular power, cooling and dynamic planning

Our experts put the customer first, devising multiple solutions before a decision was reached on the one that best suited their needs.

We took extra steps to ensure guests wouldn’t be impacted by our equipment. This involved choosing specific locations to install our products and running armoured, high-voltage cable underwater, while simultaneously protecting it from abrasions from the dock.

Our first challenge was to configure a setup that comprised generators, fuel tanks, step-up transformers and much more – all inside a 60ft x 100ft site. We also had to consider the temporary requirement for a crane and multiple tractor trailers that would deliver our equipment.

There were many obstacles that we had to work around too, like palm trees and fire hydrants, which affected our logistics. Our experts had taken every facet of this into consideration though and our ability to adapt quickly allowed many dynamic decisions when time was of the essence.

Equipment was tested at our service centres in Miami and Houston and we had an engineer and a tech specialist on site as an extra contingency and for any high voltage situations.

Our HVAC equipment was put in place on the docks for some of the boat manufacturers. There was no feasible way to deliver our equipment onto the docks, so our mobile, modular products were ideal for craning into place.

There was also the demand for the two large exhibition tents on the docks to enjoy our climate control. We accomplished this by running our hoses around the perimeter of the site, while ensuring that no entrances were impacted by this or cabling.

The Impact

Bigger and better than previous years event

The event was a roaring success, with sales surpassing the previous year. The safe install in the face of such difficulties was the result of our experienced people on site and the collaboration of many teams and organisations, including the City of Miami and contractors. As a result, the yachts on show dazzled the attending guests and we had another satisfied customer.
