The Challenge

Powering an event of scale for a global audience

A global audience of more than 400 million and 1.8m tickets sold made the Rugby World Cup 2019 in Japan the most watched Rugby World Cup in history. It was also the first time this prestigious event was held in Asia. To guarantee that every single fan could enjoy the action, Aggreko was tasked with delivering uninterrupted power for the entirety of the tournament – all 12 stadia and the International Broadcast Centre.

The Solution

A bespoke power solution

Aggreko’s events team has more than 30 years of experience of partnering with customers to deliver world-class events. Our work with the Rugby World Cup last year was no different.

Twelve months prior to the start of the tournament our project team designed, based on experience and prior knowledge in Live Broadcasted Events, all systems to operate in the most efficient and reliable way. The complexity in Japan was all around multiple voltages and limited space at the venues so the design process was critical to the success of the project.

Over the five weeks installation period and six weeks of tournament, our multinational team installed, commissioned and operated temporary power systems across all 12 match venues and broadcast centre, to support highly critical Broadcast Services and Field of Play Lighting.

This included Primary Power, 615 distribution panels and 1250 transformers, with 2,000km of cabling running between them. The need for reliable power supply is paramount to the success of an event of any scale. A close working relationship with the Host Broadcaster Services teams was key to test our systems safely.

An important task was increasing overall fuel efficiency. Measures were put in place to optimise the running hours of equipment, to increase efficient usage and improve fuel consumption levels throughout the course of the tournament.

A number of the stadiums were located in densely populated urban areas. We responded to the client’s concerns around noise pollution, installing noise attenuators and curtains at these sites to ensure that residents were not disrupted by the tournament.
