Powering and Controlling Temperature at a Golf Event on the World Stage

The 2023 Ryder Cup was held at the Marco Simone Golf and Country Club. Due to its isolating location, Aggreko was all hands-on deck to bring one of golf’s greatest competitions to life for not just those participating but all the workers and fans watching the Europe vs US competition.

The event ran for seven days, with the showpiece competition over the 29 September – 1 October 2023. Being a self-contained Golf Village, energy was needed across the whole venue from the golf buggies charging stations to the hospitality suites and catering areas. It was no small task.

The Solution

Temporary Power with Solar Arrays to Bring Sustainable Solutions

Aggreko tackled powering the whole venues footpath, using solar arrays to help make this one of the most sustainable Ryder Cup’s to date. Energy was recycled to those areas where it was in higher demand, instead of increasing the overall energy usage.

A total of 30 MW of power and 12 MW of cooling plus 1500 sqm of solar energy and a combined cable length of 135 km was used to power the golf event. The isolation of the golf course and its rarity to hold a large-scale event meant not all of the local roads were fitted with sufficient lighting. However, Aggreko came to the rescue, lighting up the way with 4,106 lights in addition to the 104 tower lights installed across the venue.

It took a mini village of people to bring the event to life, with 44 Aggreko members being on-site at peak times. Jono Rose, General Manager, Aggreko Event Services: “We’ve had to employ some innovative thinking using the experts within our team, but making sure we keep the flexible solutions across the course to ensure we can provide the power required but keeping in line with Aggreko’s thinking and key pillars.”
