The Challenge

Providing reliable power for a Formula 1 night race where lighting was critical

In 2023, Formula 1 hosted the first-ever Las Vegas Grand Prix. Such a prestigious event needed to go perfectly, delivering a flawless experience for everyone watching – both at the track and at home. Failure was not an option.

The race was taking place at night, which created an extra challenge. Formula 1 needed an energy provider that could keep three vital elements of the race running flawlessly: the lighting, which would keep the track visible; the television broadcast; and the HVAC keeping drivers and spectators comfortable all through the Vegas nights.

The provider needed to be reliable enough to ensure that no one missed a minute of the action – and that everyone was kept safe and comfortable.

The Solution

Reliable low-emission generators and expert engineers set Formula 1 Heineken Silver Las Vegas Grand Prix up for success

Aggreko has a long-standing relationship with world-class events, providing the power that enables TV companies across the globe to broadcast the action to millions of fans around the world.

Thanks to our success with this and our experience in providing power in difficult locations, Las Vegas Grand Prix, Inc. was confident in the ability of our expert engineers to design and deliver the ideal solution for the Las Vegas Strip Circuit as their Official Temporary Power Partner.

Aggreko powered the track lighting – one of the most critical components of a night race – in 16 different locations around the circuit. We installed multiple generators at several key locations around the track and in the centre of Las Vegas. Our best-in-class Tier 4 Final generators minimised emissions while our battery energy storage was also used to deliver hybrid power in conjunction with the generators. All the generators were configured to deliver power where it was needed without driving up emissions.

Aggreko also powered the opening ceremony using hybrid solutions encompassing battery energy storage systems and generators to provide a top-notch act with the lowest emissions on the market.

Additionally, we provided temperature control for a wide variety of locations including VIP hospitality suites, the Pit Building Zone, Grandstands, Skybox and more, which had a massive impact on comfort in the cool Vegas weather.

In total, we provided over 22 miles of cable, 6M BTUs of heat, and 15 megawatts of power to the event – about double the amount of power that the 20 cars use to race around the circuit.

The Aggreko Difference
The entire circuit lit and powered all weekend, with no interruption - allowing teams to focus on the racing, TV companies to focus on broadcasting, and spectators to focus on enjoying the event
The Impact

Flawless power delivery with lower fuel consumption and reduced emissions

Our expertly designed and delivered solution ensured that the circuit was lit and powered throughout the weekend without any interruption.

This was no mean feat: The Las Vegas Strip Circuit runs right through the heart of the city, which meant that every piece of equipment had to be placed perfectly. Developing the solution took all of the Aggreko team’s expertise. But the team managed to develop a solution that would keep running reliably despite periodic track closures and the constant presence of the public.

The use of Tier 4 Final generators helped Formula 1 keep up its environmental targets by reducing particulate matter by 98% and NIOx by 96%.

By using the latest generators alongside battery technology, we ensured that power was delivered not only flawlessly but also with sustainability in mind. This minimised fuel costs and further reduced emissions to back up the sustainability efforts in Formula 1.
