The Challenge

Providing a pleasant climate in tents that meet the new post pandemic guidelines for ventilation

The Invictus Games is an international, multi-sport event for the wounded and sick service personnel, broadcasting the sporting talent of what the athletes can achieve post-injury. The Games finally took place from the 16th – 22nd of April 2022 after the initial 2020 event was postponed due to the pandemic.

Aggreko was proud to be challenged by the Invictus Games to provide temperature control solutions across twenty-six tent structures at the Invictus Games in Zuiderpark the Hague, the Netherlands. The customer was looking for a partner with previous experience in heating and ventilating tents, with a surface area of many thousands of square metres. Aggreko’s recent work in the Netherlands demonstrated years of experience in this field and having worked on largescale events with TIG Sports made this the perfect partnership.

Aggreko’s challenge was to apply temperature control for heating and ventilating tents within the temporary stadium. The customer wanted a solution in which fuel was stored in as few places as possible and requested an installation with high efficiency and redundancy. Temperature control is imperative at public events of an equivalent size and large numbers of equipment was required. The solution had to be ‘invisible’ such as finding routes for water hoses without it becoming an obstacle and therefore a central control set up was desirable. The task was to maintain high energy efficiency and limit fuel consumption, whilst meeting the post pandemic guidelines for ventilation from the World Health Organisation.

The Solution

Each area has a central system with boiler and air handlers with little return air

Aggreko’s innovative solutions provided 3 x 2.5 MW boilers, 12 x air handlers, 35 fan coils, 4 km of flexible water hoses, ducting as well as technical support during the event using 2-3 technicians. All temporary tent structures requiring ventilation and heating amounted to an impressive 15,000 m2. Aggreko designed and calculated specific installations for the layout and made proposals for the locations of the equipment, that were adopted almost one-on-one.

The equipment was sourced from Aggreko’s depot in Moerdijk, the Netherlands, with additions from European depots. Aggreko’s state of the art technology allowed for the venues temperature to be constantly adjusted with specialised kit, based on the use of current measurement data so that no heat was released unnecessarily. Due to Aggreko’s expertise, the vast increase in energy efficiency allowed for the successful running of temperature control systems, particularly with the large combination of materials used.

Aggreko’s solution ensured that the new guidelines were met, while still being able to receive visitors in well heated and ventilated areas.

The Aggreko Difference
Aggreko supplied measurable temperature control and efficient heating and ventilation within twenty-six tent structures, providing cost savings for the customer
The Impact

Aggreko’s temperature control systems managed to provide cost savings across all energy supplies

The customer was extremely pleased as Aggreko’s temperature control systems managed to provide cost savings across all energy supplies. This allowed the Invictus Games to maximise ventilation production whilst consistently complying with prescribed guidelines.
